24th July 2026 Hiking - Walking: Flatford circuit Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Light airs Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: sunny and hot Max Speed: Distance Covered: 3 miles (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Friday 24th July - walk **** – Flatford circuit – sunny and hot. Friday is usually Maeva day but she is poorly so sadly did not get to see her today so I had a plan, first I had a quick drive down to Felixstowe Ferry at 6 to take a few weather pics but once again no luck. I then sorted my pics before getting up for breakfast in the garden followed by my exercises in the sunshine, Mag had already been on her early morning walk and feed a neighbours cats. I then packed a picnic and we left Felixtowe at 11 on another mystery tour:) Over the Orwell Bridge before turning onto the A 12, the traffic heading into Ipswich from London was very heavy! Mag guessed when we took the Flatford turnoff, once on the one way lane, past the National Trust car park we parked in a little gravel lay-by at the top of the hill at the start of the path through the sheep field leading to the wooden footbridge over the River Stour. I did have a little trouble parking with the van losing traction but thought I had left it so we could just roll out backwards as we set off down the hill; it was pretty hot too :( No kingfishers in the creek today as it was covered in duckweed so we crossed the bridge spotting our first rowing boat, there were not many out today as I the hire boats were not being used at Flatford we think? But there were loads of people having fun on paddle boards! We reached the famous bridge at Flatford and as we were a little early for lunch we headed to Willy Lotts cottage first which was fairly busy, past an artist doing a great job! After taking a few pics and speaking to a nice family we returned to the mill, our usual seat was in full sun so we found a lovely shady spot by the lock gate for lunch which we shared with loads of fish, they particularly liked our grated cheese, probably the highlight of the day! It was then time to amble back to the van up the hill via the little wild garden and along the one way lane to our van which is when our troubles began! I tried to roll back off the lay-by but ended up rolling into the hedge and no matter how hard I tried the van would not gain traction as the wheel spun! Loads of people stopped to give us a push but to no avail so we had no choice than to phone the RAC and from the time we made the call to being pulled out by a very helpful was 45 minutes and really can’t fault the service! Then because of the long queues at the Toys r us roundabout we headed towards Manningtree and took the Bradfield road back and were back in Felixstowe just after 4 for a welcome cuppa! There might be enough breeze for a foil over the weekend, some showers are even forecast, we can’t remember the last time it rained but it is sadly carnival weekend which means Felixstowe will be heaving so we will do our best to avoid them!
